ASSET ALLOCATION BETWEEN DIVIDEND AND INTEREST VEHICLES
Dennis Mitchell, Executive Vice-President and Chief Investment Officer, Sentry Investments

Based on fund flows, the bond market has absorbed more money recently than equities at the height of the dot-com bubble. That’s because investors are gravitating to the perceived safety of bonds. However, without adequate equity exposure, investors face the risk of not having sufficient investment capital to meet their retirement income needs. This session outlines Sentry’s strategy for taking equity risk to generate sustainable income in a low-growth environment.

9:40 – 10:40

THE BOTTOM LINE ON RETIREMENT INCOME
John Natale, Assistant Vice President, Tax and Retirement Services, Manulife Investments

When it comes to retirement income, not all dollars are treated equally. Some types of income are more tax efficient than others. It's not only how much you keep that counts, but also how much that shows up on your tax return so that you can maximize your government benefits and credits. This session reviews the taxation of different types of income using a case study example describing how to realign a portfolio (using the product allocation tool) to provide sustainable and tax efficient income.

PRACTICE VALUATION PRESENTATION
George Hartman, Managing Partner, Accretive Advisor Inc.

Many popular ideas about how to value a financial advisory practice are based on “rules-of-thumb”, such as a “percentage of AUM” or a “multiple of trailing 12-month revenue”. Unfortunately, the rule-of-thumb methodology presumes that all advisory practices are equal - which they are not. Each one is a living, breathing entity with multiple nuances that affect its value.
This session will demonstrate how proper practice valuation allows sellers to feel adequately compensated for their life’s work and buyers to feel they have paid a fair price.

ETF PORTFOLIO SOLUTIONS TO CAPTURE ASSETS IN MOTION

Daniel Stanley, Vice President, BMO Investments Inc.

Despite the challenges facing investment advisors today, demographic changes are likely to put assets in motion over the next ten years. These assets in motion present a tremendous opportunity for advisors who position themselves at the receiving end of this dynamic. Advisors who have a number of different ETF based income solutions in their toolkits are likely to increase the odds of growing their business. I will review a number of different income focused solutions and highlight the pros and cons and differences between competing issuer product.

Money death—running out of money during retirement—is a big financial worry, particularly for the baby boomer generation. Many boomers are nearing retirement with archaic portfolio strategies that may no longer be ideal. In addition, there are a number of behavioral biases that can increase the likelihood of money death for millions of Boomers.
But there are practical steps advisors can take that to help prevent money death.
The Brandes Institute, an investment think tank based in San Diego, recently released a report dedicated to solving the money death problem: Boomers Behaving Badly. Building on this report, Bob Schmidt will share practical guidance on how advisors may reduce the risk of money death for Baby Boomers by maximizing post-retirement investment returns.

Tom’s self-described controversial talk, will give advisors the 12 essential questions to ask business owners to get the conversation started.
